Nintendo may be facing a surprise jump in profits but they are not resting on its laurels. The larger screen Nintendo DSi LL (aka the DSi XL when it goes in the U.S. and Europe in Q1 2010) is one such attack, but according to the Financial Times, the gaming companies are also considering integrated, contract 3G free, its next-gen DS.
The idea, says Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has been, from the Amazon Kindle, which offers 3G connectivity but do not charge an ongoing fee requested to the owner, but the cost of 3G would be integrated into the original purchase price. Gamers would be able to download new songs on their DS, even if they are not near a wireless connection.

Iwata acknowledges that, if incorporated into 3G Price in the console “customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up,” to take over, but it is obviously a possibility it under consideration. It seems likely that would be integrated 3G only for game downloads, but as online gaming, as this would use much more data.
