A trip that takes four hours in the air can eat four evenings before you ever leave the house. Anyone who has tried to get two adults and a child to a mid-sized European city on a set budget knows how that goes. Fourteen tabs, three abandoned carts, a notes app full of prices you can no longer find.

Plenty of that has genuinely got easier. Search got faster, platforms started remembering your details, and the paperwork mostly lives on your phone now.

The catch is that friction didn’t vanish. It moved. And the places it moved to are less obvious, which is exactly why people still sprint through terminals and still get stuck at passport control with the wrong document.

The tedious part isn’t choosing where to go

Ask someone what slowed their booking down and they’ll usually say indecision. Watch them do it and you’ll see something else. The clock goes on repetition.

You check one route on four sites to see whether the price is real. You re-enter the passport number for the fourth passenger, staring at the 95-minute layover time displayed on the screen of an airport you have never set foot in, with no way to tell if this duration is more than enough or too risky. Then, at the desk, you scroll your inbox looking for a reference number.

Individually, none of it is a big deal. Add it up across a family booking and you’ve lost a night.

What changed in the search box

The genuine improvement wasn’t prettier design. It was moving from one price to a range of prices, so you can see the shape of a route instead of a single snapshot.

Price calendars are worth more than promo codes

A month view puts every departure date on screen at once. That kills a lot of guesswork, because “fly midweek to save money” isn’t true on every route and the calendar shows you where it isn’t.

Watch for sudden jumps between two neighbouring days. Nine times out of ten there’s a school holiday or a bank holiday sitting on the expensive side of that line. Shifting your outbound by a single day often beats any discount code you’ll find.

Multi-airline routes reach places single tickets never did

About half of all flights are run independently, outside the alliance agreements that let carriers sell seats on each other’s planes. Which means a lot of perfectly logical connections were simply never sold as one ticket.

Booking platforms started assembling those routes themselves. Where cheap combined fares bite

This is the misunderstanding I’d fix first if I could only fix one. A stitched-together itinerary and an airline connection look the same on a results page. They are not the same product.

Land late on a regular connecting ticket and the airline sorts you out. Land late on two separate tickets and the second airline has you down as a no-show. Nobody owes you a rebooking, so you’re buying a new seat at same-day walk-up prices, which can cost more than the entire original trip.

Three checks before you commit to a stitched route. How long is the gap, really, once you allow for baggage reclaim? Is the connection protected, and by whom? And do you have to clear immigration between the two flights? That third one bites hardest, because transiting through certain countries needs a visa even when you never leave the building.

The quiet upgrades that happen after you pay

Less discussed, but this is where the last few years actually delivered. Small jobs that used to be yours now sit with the booking platform.

Passenger details get saved after the first order, so the next set of names and document numbers fills itself in. That matters more than it sounds. A surname that doesn’t match the passport is a slow, expensive fix, and it usually happens because someone was typing at midnight.

Check-in has moved inside the apps too, generally opening 24 hours ahead. Extra bags can often be added after the fact, if the airline allows it.

What technology still hasn’t fixed

Borders, mainly. Since 10 April 2026 the EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully live at external Schengen borders. Stamps are gone; non-EU visitors give fingerprints and a face scan instead. Your first registration takes longer than the old stamp ever did, and queues at big hubs have been rough all summer.

ETIAS, the separate pre-travel authorisation, still isn’t open. You cannot apply for one, so any site selling you an ETIAS today is taking your money for nothing. Britain’s ETA is a different thing entirely, it is live, and it costs £20.

Use the official EU entry rules page instead of whatever ranks first, and leave extra time for your first crossing.

Then there’s the stuff no algorithm gives you. A star rating won’t tell you which side of a river goes quiet after nine, or where the good coffee is at 6 am. For that you still need someone who actually walked it, like this look at Bangkok’s Khlong Ton Sai riverside.

Book it so there’s less to go wrong

Getting from a vague idea to a confirmed seat is faster than it has ever been. What no tool will do is turn a fragile itinerary into a safe one. Know which kind of ticket you’re actually holding, give yourself a longer gap than feels necessary, and deal with entry requirements while you’re still at home. Handle those, and the software takes care of nearly everything else.
